Kwashiorkor: The Cruellest Face of Famine in Gaza

As famine devastates the Gaza Strip, Palestinian children are facing a silent killer even more lethal than ordinary hunger: Kwashiorkor. This severe form of acute malnutrition is stripping children of their childhoods, reducing them to fragile bodies with swollen bellies and hollow faces. It is not simply a health crisis, it is the visible mark of a man-made catastrophe.

Kwashiorkor is the direct consequence of protein deficiency. A child may eat bread or rice, yet without protein the body cannot grow or function. Fluids then accumulate in the stomach, face and limbs. What appears as fullness is in fact the cruel sign of starvation, children literally swelling as they waste away.

Symptoms include bloated abdomens, swollen limbs, changes in skin and hair, loss of appetite and severe lethargy. Such conditions emerge when children are denied protein, vitamins and essential minerals. In Gaza this is not accidental, it is the outcome of blockade, bombardment and the systematic denial of food, medicine and safe living conditions.

According to UN data, more than 16,000 children in Gaza have been treated for malnutrition since January. In May alone, over 5,000 were admitted, including 636 classified as Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). June recorded 6,500 cases, the highest yet since the assault began. In July, 5,000 children required urgent care in just two weeks. Each number represents a child robbed of health, safety and dignity.

The Gaza Ministry of Health confirms at least 317 people, including 121 children, have already died directly from starvation and malnutrition. Humanitarian agencies warn the real toll is far higher, with estimates that more than 62,000 Palestinians, the vast majority children, have perished from hunger and lack of medical care since the war began. Behind every statistic lies a family destroyed.

Treatment of Kwashiorkor is complex and requires immediate medical intervention: stabilising blood sugar, treating dehydration, administering therapeutic rehydration solutions such as ReSoMal, correcting electrolytes and carefully reintroducing protein to prevent Refeeding Syndrome. Yet such treatment is almost impossible under siege, where hospitals are bombed, medicines blocked and doctors overwhelmed.

This crisis is not a natural disaster, it is the result of deliberate policies of starvation imposed on an entire population. The spread of Kwashiorkor among Gaza’s children is proof of a collective punishment strategy that violates international law and basic human morality.

Kwashiorkor in Gaza is no longer just a medical condition, it is living evidence of a systematic war against children. Distended bellies and pale faces are the cries of a generation on the brink of being erased. The world cannot look away. To remain silent is to be complicit. Gaza’s children are calling: save us before it is too late.
